Detroit, MI - Sunday, May 30, 2010 marks the celebration of Twenty-Five years of Metroplex Records, one of the first record labels dedicated to the distribution, recording, and artist development for Detroit’s electronic music. This monumental event will be the first time that all four techno-originators will perform under one roof in over fifteen years. In addition to an all-star line-up all (18+ years) are invited to see Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Eddie Fowlkes at the Carr Center at 311 E. Grand River (on the corner of Center Street in Paradise Valley) from 10:00 p.m. until 10:00 a.m. during the Detroit Electronic Music Festival [DEMF] weekend.
Inspired by the eclectic Disc Jockey, the legendary” Electrifying Mojo,” who introduced a new and progressive music format to the Detroit airwaves. Artists such as the “Art of Noise,” “Mantronic,” and of course the infamous German trio “Kraftwerk” were some of many groups that peaked the interest of the “Bellville Three,” (Atkins, May and Saunderson). From the late 70’s to the mid 80’s many groups of young entrepreneurially-spirited Detroiter’s hosted PAID events at a multitude of venues; from the basements or backyards of residences, local churches to the Y.M.C.A., all requiring DJ’s as the source of entertainment.
The popularity of having parties resulted with a higher demand for more DJ’s. One of the first to meet their needs was DJ group “Deep Space,” founded by Derrick May. Friends Juan, Eddie and Kevin joined forces with him as they were one out two (Direct Drive) highly recognized DJ groups that were booked for the majority of the “Gigs,” (parties) that took place practically every weekend.
While the Gigs were good, Atkins was always quenching for more, thus was the conception of Metroplex Records founded in 1985. Chart topping hits such as “No UFO’s,” “Clear,” and “Technicolor,” are some the first songs produced by Atkins steering the label into national and international acclaim. Atkins continued to produce music under his aliases of Model 500 and Cybotron, yet continued to embrace and educate his colleagues and friends about this new and innovating art form of music. This prompted many of the internationally renowned Detroit techno pioneers to hit the studio, producing and recording singles under his label, leaving the rest to history…
