A new Nielsen study shows music is consumed via YouTube three times more than via legal downloads. Of the participants in the study, 57% declared they’d watched music videos on a computer and 23% had watched music videos on the mobile phone (versus less than 20% who had legally downloaded the music they consumed). According to the report, “Music video, whilst not a new invention, remains a primary means of accessing music for the consumer and marketing music for the artist or record label… and remains hugely popular with the consumers. With the technological advances and global appetites for internet and mobile phone connectivity – the music video will probably remain a key method of reaching the music audience.” (see attached link for more)
Both established and aspiring artists are not turning a blind eye – more and more musicians are uploading their music videos and music content to YouTube and other social networking sites to promote and share their content. Today Mashable presented their list of 15 artists who found fame through YouTube, a few being Justin Bieber, Ysabella Brave and Greyson Chance. These artists were discovered by major labels and music professionals after amassing thousands of views on YouTube. Other artists such as Pomplamoose are able to leverage their YouTube presence to make a living on their own without a major label.
How are YOU using YouTube to share your music and connect with new fans? Post your YouTube channel so members of the group can check you out! (Oh and “Liking” is definitely encouraged if you find a music video that impresses you!)
